At 03:40 Falmouth Coastguard requested that Falmouth All Weather and Inshore Lifeboats be launched to assist in a multi-agency search for a missing person. The Falmouth, Porthoustock and Porthleven Coastguard Cliff Rescue Teams were also tasked to assist, along with the Police, Fire Brigade and Cornwall Search and Rescue Team.

The Inshore Lifeboat launched from her slipway at 03:50, with the All Weather Lifeboat leaving its pontoon berth at 03:52. Having rounded Pendennis Point both lifeboats headed across the bay arriving off Pennance Point at 04:05. A search of the shoreline was commenced from Pennance Point to Rosemullion Head using search lights and night sight equipment. By 05:30 both lifeboats had completed their search and with nothing being found the Coastguard released the lifeboats to return to their station.

The Inshore Lifeboat was recovered onto its slipway at 05:50 and was refuelled and made ready for service by 06:20. The All Weather Lifeboat had to standby in the Falmouth Inner Harbour while HMS Scott was berthed on the County Wharf but was back alongside its pontoon berth by 06:40 where it was refuelled and made ready for service by 07:00.

The initial search had commenced shortly after midnight and had also involved the use of the Coastguard Helicopter and its thermal imaging equipment. Both lifeboats were requested to launch when the search was extended to include the coastline on either side of Maenporth.
