At 22:51 Falmouth Coastguard requested that Falmouth All Weather and Inshore Lifeboats be launched following a 999 call from a family group who were cut off by the tide near Shag Rock at Mawnan Shear. The Falmouth Coastguard Rescue Team were also tasked to assist.

The Inshore Lifeboat launched from her slipway at 22:59 followed shortly afterwards by the All Weather Lifeboat which left its pontoon berth at 23:02. Having rounded Pendennis Point both Lifeboats headed across Falmouth Bay, the Inshore Lifeboat arriving on scene at 23:10 quickly locating the casualties on the shoreline.

The All Weather Lifeboat arrived on scene off August Rock at 23:21 just as the Inshore Lifeboat confirmed that all six casualties had been recovered. The All Weather Lifeboat stood by in the mouth of the Helford River while the Inshore Lifeboat landed the casualties into the care of the Coastguard Team at Durgan Beach. Once the casualties were safely ashore at 23:33 both Lifeboats were released to return to their station.

The Inshore Lifeboat was recovered onto its slipway at 23:49 and the All Weather Lifeboat was back alongside its pontoon berth at 23:59. Both lifeboats were refuelled and ready for service by 00:14.

The three adults and three young children had been exploring the coast when they had become cut off by the tide. They had initially planned to wait for the tide to recede but became concerned for their children with the onset of darkness as the temperature so wisely called for assistance. They were very appreciative of the help they were given by the volunteer lifeboat crew and coastguards.
