At 17:21 Falmouth Coastguard requested that Falmouth All Weather Lifeboat be launched to assist the 12m yacht Sand Piper with two people on board which was requesting assistance to enter the harbour.

The All Weather Lifeboat left its pontoon berth at 17:27 and having rounded the Docks headed out to meet the yacht off St Anthony Lighthouse, arriving on scene at 17:39. The yacht was under sail but its engine had failed so it was escorted into the Carrick Roads where it was then taken under tow. Once in the Falmouth Inner Harbour it was brought alongside the lifeboat and was taken to the Port Pendennis Marina where it was safely berthed at 18:25, the lifeboat then being released to return to its station.

The All Weather Lifeboat arrived back alongside its pontoon berth at 18:36 where it was refuelled and ready for service by 18:50.

The yacht had been on passage from Portsmouth to Falmouth when its engine had failed. The skipper had continued under sail in heavy seas but were exhausted and cornered about entering the harbour with no engine so had requested assistance.
