At 16:31 Falmouth Coastguard requested that Falmouth All Weather Lifeboat be launched to assist a 10m yacht with two persons on board which had run aground on August Rock.
The All Weather Lifeboat left its pontoon berth at 16:42 and having rounded Pendennis Point headed across Falmouth Bay arriving on scene off August Rock at 17:00. A passing Rigid Inflatable Boat had managed to get a line onto the yacht and was holding it off the rocks. The lifeboat placed a line on the yacht and towed it into deeper water where it was then brought alongside the lifeboat so it could be assessed for damage. Temporary repairs were carried out on its rudder before at 17:44 the tow back to Mylor started. The yacht was safely placed on its mooring off Greatwood, near Mylor at 18:50, the lifeboat being released to return to its station.
The All Weather Lifeboat was back alongside its pontoon berth by 19:07 where it was refuelled and made ready for service by 19:30.
The yacht which had been on passage had grounded on August Rock just prior to low tide. Thankfully a passing Rigid Inflatable was able to provide assistance until the Lifeboat arrived on scene. The yachts rudder had been damaged but the lifeboat crew were able carryout temporary repairs to secure the rudder and prevent any ingress of water, before towing the yacht back to its mooring.
