Hire boat aground

Date: Saturday 15 May 2021

Location: Trelissick, River Fal

Weather: SW 4-5, Slight Sea and No Swell, Good Visibility, Partly Cloudy

All weather lifeboat: (Alerted 16:20 / Returned 17:10) – Dave Nicoll (Deputy 2nd Coxswain), Carl Beardmore, Jamie Connolly, Will Allen, Wendy Rabett, James Murray

Falmouth All Weather Lifeboat was on exercise in the River Fal when at 16:20 another vessel made the lifeboat aware of a hire boat with five people on board that was aground on the rocks on the Trelissick side of the River Fal opposite Turnaware.

The All Weather Lifeboat arrived on scene at 16:21 and prepared to launch its inflatable Y-Boat to assist the boat due to the shallow water. But soon afterwards the hire company’s rigid inflatable arrived on scene. The Lifeboat stood by while the hire boat safely towed the boat clear of the rocks. Once underway back to Mylor Harbour at 16:41 the All Weather Lifeboat was released to return to station.

The All Weather Lifeboat was back alongside its pontoon berth by 17:10 where it was refuelled and made ready for service by 17:25.

The hire boats outboard engine had failed, and the wind and tide had driven the boat onto the rocks. All of those on board were wearing lifejackets and wisely waited for assistance to arrive.
