At 15:50 Falmouth Coastguard requested that Falmouth All Weather Lifeboat be launched to evacuate a sailor on an 11m yacht who had broken his forearm. The yacht had been off the entrance to the Helford River and was heading up the river to find some shelter from heavy easterly swell.
The All Weather Lifeboat left its pontoon berth at 16:02 and having rounded Pendennis Point headed across Falmouth Bay, locating the yacht on a visitors mooring off Helford Passage at 16:27. Two lifeboat crew members trained in casualty care were transferred to the yacht to assess the casualty. They placed the casualty’s arm in a temporary splint before transferring him to the All Weather Lifeboat which departed the Helford at 16:46 and headed back to Falmouth where an ambulance had been requested to meet the lifeboat on its arrival at its station.
The All Weather Lifeboat was back alongside its pontoon berth by 17:22 where the casualty was transferred ashore. The ambulance had been diverted to another incident, so arrangements were made for the casualty to be transferred by road to the A&E Department at Treliske Hospital. The lifeboat was refuelled and made ready for service by 17:50.
