Date: Thursday 2 September 2021
Location: 15 miles east of Zone Point
Weather: NNE 3-4, Slight Sea and Swell, Good Visibility, Cloudy
All weather lifeboat: (Launched 07:51 / Returned 11:00) – Jonathon Blakeston (Coxswain), Carl Beardmore, Elliot Holman, Tamsin Mulcahy, Andy Edwards, Cadan Harris, Lloyd Barron
At 07:38 Falmouth Coastguard requested that Falmouth All-Weather Lifeboat be launched to assist a seven-metre single handed yacht, which was suffering rigging issues 15 miles east of Zone Point. The exact position was unsure due to communication issues.
The All-Weather Lifeboat left its pontoon berth at 07:51 and, having rounded Zone Point, headed up to the east. The yacht was eventually located seven miles ESE of Zone Point at 08:43. The lifeboat’s Y-Class inflatable boat was launched to transfer two crew to the yacht, to assess the situation and help establish a tow. The yacht was under tow by 09:25 and by 10:45 the yacht had been safely secured to a mooring in the Falmouth Inner Harbour, the lifeboat being released to head back to its station.
The All-Weather Lifeboat was back alongside its pontoon berth by 11:00 where it was refuelled and made ready for service by 11:30.
The yacht was on passage to Liverpool from the South Coast when it had developed rigging problems and did not have an engine. Communications with the yacht had been by mobile phone and had been difficult due to its distance offshore.
