At 13:06 Falmouth Coastguard requested that Falmouth All Weather Lifeboat be launched to assist two people and a dog who were reported to be in the water after the capsize of their kayaks off Bass Point near The Lizard. The casualties had been spotted by the Bass Point NCI Lookout and Mullion Coastguard Rescue Team were also tasked to assist. The Falmouth Lifeboat was tasked as the Lizard Lifeboat was already out on a search for an overturned boat 25 miles SSW of Lizard Point.
The All Weather Lifeboat left its pontoon berth at 13:14 and having rounded Pendennis Point headed south past the Manacles and Blackhead arriving on scene at 13:52. It was confirmed that one of the casualties and the dog had managed to reach the rocks below Bass Point and was able to climb to safety. The other casualty was recovered from the water by a local fishing boat and was taken to the Lizard Lifeboat slipway where they were landed. Once it was confirmed that all casualties were safe the Falmouth Lifeboat carried out a search for the remaining Kayak which was recovered south of Bass Point, with the paddle being found close under the headland. These items were taken back to the lifeboat slipway and landed ashore before the lifeboat was released at 14:35 to return to its station.
The All Weather Lifeboat was back alongside its pontoon berth by 15:28 where it was refuelled and made ready for service by 15:45.
The casualties were not injured and were grateful for the assistance they were given. Without the help of the NCI Lookout, the prompt response of the local fishing boat and the support provided by Mullion Coastguard Team the outcome of this incident could have been very different.
