At 09:20 Falmouth Coastguard requested that Falmouth All Weather Lifeboat be launched to assist in a search following numerous reports of Red Flares sighted 10 miles SSE of The Lizard Point. The Lizard and Penlee Lifeboats were also tasked along with the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter.
The All Weather Lifeboat left its pontoon berth at 09:26 and having rounded the Manacles set a course to the South arriving on scene at 10:11. Along with the other lifeboats and the Rescue Helicopter a comprehensive search was carried out of the area in good weather conditions so at 11:32 with nothing being located the search was terminated and all units were released to return to their stations.
The All Weather Lifeboat arrived back alongside its pontoon berth at 12:48 where it was refuelled and ready for service by 13:05.
The initial report came from a yacht sailing south of Lizard Point, which was followed by many other reports of an orange flare in the sky. It is believed that the sighting may have been caused by increased meteor activity.
