At 17:25 Falmouth Coastguard requested that Falmouth All Weather Lifeboat be launched to assist a 12m yacht with two persons on board which had reported engine failure in Gerrans Bay. A Motor Yacht that was on passage diverted to stand by the yacht which dropped its anchor when it got within half a mile of the shore.

The All Weather Lifeboat left its pontoon berth at 17:40 and having rounded Zone Point headed up to the east arriving on scene in Gerrans Bay at 18:09. A tow line was passed to the yacht and it was held head to sea while its skipper recovered its anchor. The yacht was then towed clear of Gerrans Bay and on to Falmouth where it was safely moored alongside Port Pendennis Marina at 19:48, the lifeboat being released to return to its station.

The All Weather Lifeboat was back alongside its pontoon berth by 19:52 where it was refuelled and made ready for service by 20:10.

The yacht had been on passage from Exmouth to its new home in the Helford following a long renovation project. The yacht had suffered engine failure due to a fuel problem which had proved impossible to rectify in the prevailing moderate swell. Having drifted closer to the shore the skipper was concerned about sailing clear of the lee shore so dropped the yachts anchor and contacted the coastguard for assistance.
