At 20:36 Falmouth Coastguard requested that Falmouth All Weather Lifeboat be launched to assist the Mevagissey and St Austell Coastguard Cliff Rescue Teams in a search for a dog over the cliff near West Portholland.
The All Weather Lifeboat left its pontoon berth at 20:43 and having rounded Zone Point headed up to the East arriving off West Portholland in Veryan Bay at 21:15. The All Weather Lifeboat launched it small inflatable Y-Boat and both boats carried out a shoreline search. As the light faded the All Weather Lifeboat was used to provide illumination of the area to assist the Cliff Teams in their search. At 22:58 with nothing being located the search was terminated and having recovered its Y-Boat the All Weather Lifeboat was released to return to its station.
The All Weather Lifeboat arrived back alongside its pontoon berth at 23:40 where it was refuelled and ready for service by 00:15.
The dog had been reported over the cliff top on the Port Loe side of West Portholland. Access to this part of the coastline is very restricted and the undergrowth above the cliff is extremely dense. Due to safety concerns the search was terminated. It is believed that the dog turned up safe and well the following day.
