At 06:42 Falmouth Coastguard requested that Falmouth Inshore Lifeboat be launched following a call from a 13m yacht reporting that they were caught on fishing gear near Nare Head at entrance to the Helford.
The Inshore Lifeboat launched from her slipway at 06:54 and having rounded Pendennis Point headed across Falmouth Bay arriving on scene at 07:10. Lifeboat crew from the Inshore Lifeboat were put on board the yacht to try and assist in freeing it from the fishing gear. The yacht had deployed its anchor, and this combined with the strong ebb tide made the task more difficult. By 08:40 the yacht was freed from the fishing gear, but the remaining rope meant that the yachts engine could not be used, and its rudder was affected, so the yacht was taken in tow. The yacht was taken to Mylor Harbour where it was safely handed over at 10:02, the Inshore Lifeboat was then released to return to its station.
The Inshore Lifeboat was recovered onto its slipway at 10:14 where the lifeboat was refuelled and made ready for service by 10:45.
The skipper of the yacht which had two people, a dog and cat on board had wisely requested assistance when they had been unable to free themselves from the fishing gear.
