At 18:44 Falmouth Coastguard requested that Falmouth Inshore Lifeboat be launched following a call from the two occupants of a 4m Open Boat reporting that they had broken down off Portscatho.
The Inshore Lifeboat launched from its slipway at 19:00 and having rounded Zone Point headed up to the east into Gerrans Bay arriving on scene off Portscatho at 19:17. Once the boat had recovered its anchor a tow line was made fast and the vessel was towed back into Portscatho where it was safely secured at 19:33, the Inshore Lifeboat then being released to return to its station.
The Inshore Lifeboat was recovered on to its slipway at 19:59 where it was refuelled and made ready for service by 20:16.
The boats outboard engine had failed, and the boat was too far offshore to row back in the prevail conditions. The occupants of the boat dropped their anchor and contacted the coastguard for assistance. A Pan broadcast was made by the coastguard but there were no vessels in the area available to assist so the Inshore Lifeboat was tasked. The occupants of the boat were well equipped with a handheld VHF radio and lifejackets and were extremely grateful for the assistance they received.
