At 15:21 Falmouth Coastguard requested that Falmouth All Weather be launched to assist the 18m (90 GRT) Fishing Scalloper Aquinis (BM519) with four people on board which had broken down 8 miles ESE of Zone Point.
The All Weather Lifeboat left its pontoon berth at 15:31 and having rounded Zone Point headed up to the East arriving on scene at 16:05. A tow line was passed to the vessel and at 14:15 to tow towards Falmouth commenced with slow progress being made in the prevailing conditions.
With limited berthing options available in the harbour the Inshore Lifeboat was launched at 18:38 to assist with the berthing of the vessel.
Once both boats had rounded the lighthouse and were approaching the Docks the tow was shortened and the vessel was then brought alongside the lifeboat. It was then taken into the inner harbour where it was safely moored alongside the Fuel Barge with assistance from the Inshore Lifeboat crew at 19:55. Both lifeboats were then released to return to their station.
The Inshore Lifeboat was recovered onto its slipway at 20:02 and the All Weather Lifeboat arrived back alongside its pontoon berth at 20:08, with both being refuelled and ready for service by 20:25.
The Scalloper had suffered a major gearbox failure and with no other vessels in the area the Coastguard had requested that Falmouth Lifeboat launch to assist. The skipper and crew were very grateful for the assistance they received.
